My two oldest children (3 year old and 5 year old) were on the same soccer team this fall and it was HILARIOUS! Now I’m not making fun of them, but if you’ve every watched young children play any sort of organized sport, you know what I mean. They are so adorable I can’t get enough of it!
With soccer games comes snacks and a little cringing when I think about what kind of snacks other moms will bring for after the game.
Now let’s be real. Young children really don’t NEED a ton of calories after they practice for 30 minutes and play a game for 30 minutes. I won’t get into too much detail about other snacks that were brought, but let’s just say most did not qualify as “dietitian-approved” snacks. So I put together a list of 5 snacks for you to choose from the next time your child has a soccer game, basketball game, dance class, karate class or any extra-curricular activity that keeps them on the go. These are excellent snacks to fuel their adventures adding proper nutrition to their day.
And as for drinks…leave it to water! Children who are physically active in sports and other physical activities do NOT need sports drinks.
Smart Sports Snacks for Kids
Fruit: fresh fruit like bananas, apples, pears, berries or dried fruit like small boxes of raisins are simple on the go snacks.
Vegetables: yes believe it or not, a lot of kids love raw vegetables like baby carrots and sliced peppers. Pack them in snack size bags for a simple snack.
Whole Grain Crackers: they DO exist, just look for crackers that are labeled as “whole grain” and put them into snack size bags.
Cheese Sticks: are individually packaged and simple to throw in a cooler and go.
Yogurt or Yogurt Smoothies: I recently discovered Dannon® Danimals® Smoothies and the kids LOVE them! They are the perfect snack for on the go activities like soccer. These smoothies can be found at Walmart (along with the other 4 smart snacks). They provide “Only the Good Stuff®” and contain no high fructose corn syrup or artificial flavors, and like other dairy products they provide a good source of calcium and vitamin D, perfect to fuel kids’ adventures.
For my kids last soccer game I brought bananas and a 12 pack of Dannon® Danimals® Watermelon/Strawberry Smoothies and Strawberry/Strawberry Kiwi Smoothies. And the snack was a BIG hit! Hopefully I educated a few parents on smart snacks for kids!
If you’d like to help encourage your kids and their school to be active for at least 60 minutes a day, check out specially marked packages of Dannon® Danimals® labeled with “Fuel Up to Play 60.” If you find a “Golden Bongo” bottle you could win a Play60 Field Day for your school with NFL pros. Check out the Fuel Up to Play website for more details.

Your kids are so cute! My girls are taking soccer classes now and they barely move in the 30 minute class (they're 3 1/2) and all the kids want snacks after the class. It makes me crazy. Thankfully my girls are happy with baby carrots and they won't ask for anything else! Great list of snacks here!

Yes, exactly like my 3 1/2 year old! I think it's the novelty of the game/snack idea. At least we can build the snacks into their daily meal/snack schedule so it fits no matter what :)

Great ideas! While snacks definitely aren't NEEDED after only 30 minutes of play, they are a fun part of the game day experience. :) I love the yogurt smoothie idea!

That's so true Melanie. I'm pretty sure my 3 year old's favorite part of the game is the snack ;)

Your kids are adorable. Great snack suggestions for the kiddos. Here in Lexington, MA where I live, parents used to bring so much junk food to the games. Thankfully, I worked successfully with the soccer league to devise a Fruit & Water Only snack guideline which most teams now follow. Good nutrition and sports should go hand in hand!

Thanks Liz :) I need to speak to the league organizers and be more proactive about the issue of better snack choices.
