This 6-Ingredient Homemade Taco Seasoning is a fantastic substitute for taco seasoning packets since there is no salt added. But it still has plenty of flavors that are perfect for any Mexican recipe!
I am all about making cooking simple. With that said there are a few things I make from scratch – with taco seasoning being one of them.
I started a few years ago for a few reasons:
- My version contains no salt,
- I cook Mexican-flavored dishes so often that I wanted a large batch of the seasoning on hand, and
- I like easily being able to chose how many tablespoons I would like to use in a dish versus using the standard amount in a seasoning packet.
What I find funny about this recipe and many others on my blog is if you ask me what my favorite cuisine is, Mexican would be far from it!
Apparently, since I love my husband dearly AND it’s easy to make Mexican dishes quite nutritious, I make a TON of Mexican-inspired dishes like this Slow Cooker Shredded Mexican Chicken.
And this One-Pot Cheesy Mexican Beef Skillet with Quinoa is a family favorite as well.
And I would like to emphasize Mexican-INSPIRED since I can’t handle anything spicy and wouldn’t consider my meals authentic Mexican.
But thankfully it’s so easy to add more spice to a dish than to take it out.
This recipe makes a large batch (the size of a typical spice jar) so save those empty spice jars!
My family has also started to love guacamole, so it was perfect timing that I came across this simple and delicious Guacamole Seasoning recipe to try soon!
I personally love having the choice as to the amount of seasoning I would like to use in my recipes.
Sometimes I only need a tablespoon of seasoning like in my southwest burger recipe, but other times I need three tablespoons like in my Cheesy Mexican Chicken Casserole.
Dietitian’s Dish
Although not everyone is sensitive to sodium in regards to their blood pressure, it’s always a good idea to be aware of sodium levels in food.
The recommended amount for the average individual is only one teaspoon per day.
This can add up very quickly.
Sodium is found in a variety of foods from baked goods, meat (cold cuts and cured meats), as well as added to so many other foods like canned and processed foods.
To easily reduce your sodium intake:
- Limit the amount of salt added to recipes (or omit completely)
- Keep the salt shaker off the dinner table
- Focus on eating plenty of fruits and vegetables
