Jump to RecipeDo you ever get in a snack rut and can only think of offering your kids goldfish or pretzels?
Honestly, I do at times but as a dietitian, I try to offer enough variety. When I’m in a rush or have run out of fresh fruit, offering them snacks like crackers isn’t a big deal.
Of course, crackers or other grain-based snacks are super simple to offer, but homemade snacks like these energy bites do not take much time either.
You may be thinking I don’t have time to make my own snacks, I barely have enough time to shop for snacks!
Well, these bites take about 10 minutes to make and can be a great way to get your kids involved in the kitchen. Even 2-year-olds can help stir the mix and older kids can help form the energy bites.
I offered these bites to my family when my husband was home and let’s just say between the 5 of us, the bites didn’t last long! Next time I’ll be doubling the batch.
Now, I do NOT make homemade snacks on a regular basis. My healthy go-to snacks include bananas, sliced apples, clementines, raw veggies (carrots, bell peppers) and hummus, yogurt (usually Greek), and cheese with whole grain crackers.
Dietitian’s Dish
These bites are full of nutritious ingredients along with a little sweetness added from the mini chocolate chips.
Oats are 100% whole grain and a good source of fiber.
Almond butter and chia seeds contain omega-3s (healthy fats) and chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber.
Quite the powerhouse of nutrients in these bite-size snacks.
Time Saver Tip
If you want to save even more time, instead of rolling the mixture into balls, place it into an 8 x 8 in. baking pan and serve them as granola bars.
