These Detroiter Cheesesteak Subs are hearty and nutritious and a perfect substitute for a restaurant sub but a whole lot healthier.
Growing up one of my parents’ favorite takeout places was a local sub shop that is famous for cheesesteak subs.
And of course I grew to love them. But then later as an adult (and dietitian) I went back to our favorite little place and wow they sure were still delicious. But oh so greasy!
Since then I’ve wanted to find a healthy alternative that was just as delicious but not quite as greasy (and unhealthy) as our local sub shop.
Well, that’s what I had in mind when I came up with this Detroit Cheesesteak Sub recipe.
Now I am not an expert when it comes to beef cuts. However I have come a long way in the past year.
This trip in itself was a huge eye opening when it comes to different cuts of beef.
For this cheesesteak recipe, I actually intended to use beef tenderloin. However, when I went to the butcher counter and asked about it, the butcher informed me it was around $22 per pound. And they keep this type of cut in the back because people steal it!
Needless to say, I was a bit surprised (regarding both responses from the butcher).
I then asked his suggestion for a similar cut of beef that was still lean and fit my budget.
That’s when the butcher recommended top sirloin filets.
I also asked the butcher to slice the filets very thin because I was using it for a cheesesteak and he was more than happy to help.
Note to self: get to know my butcher!
Dietitian’s Dish
Did you know that the calcium found in only one slice of Swiss cheese is 20 percent of the recommended daily value?
About 1,000 mg per day of calcium is suggested for people over the age of 4, excluding pregnant and lactating women.
Calcium found in dairy products is not only important for kids but also for adults.
Proper calcium intake, along with other vitamins and minerals, is essential for maintaining bone mass and helping to reduce the risk of osteoporosis as you age.

I honestly have never tried a "real" philly cheesesteak before, but I'm pretty sure I'd love them. Glad to hear you'd enjoy mine :)
