Nothing beats visiting somewhere when it’s 82 degrees year round and only 2 1/2 hours from Detroit, Michigan, especially when it’s averaging 10 degrees for several days. No I’m not talking about flying to Florida, I’m talking about a visit to Castaway Bay Indoor Water Park and Resort in Sandusky, Ohio. Not only is it very doable to drive there for just one night, but there is plenty to do if you want to stay longer! Check out my experience this past week and don’t forget to enter to win 4 free day passes to Castaway Bay on my Chocolate Slopes Instagram page!
We visited Castaway Bay this past week, in between Christmas and New Years, and it was the absolutely perfect time. Not only did all my kids have off school, but the crowds were smaller than we expected.
The resort has several room options to fit everyone’s needs. Since we decided to go a little last minute there were no suites available so we stayed in the Starfish room. This fits 5 people, including 2 double beds and a pull out chair. If you’re not in your room much this room is doable for a family of 5, however, if you’re staying more than one night with a family our size, I would recommend one of the suites like the Tarpon Suite which includes 1 king size bed and a semi-private room with 2 bunk beds.
The water park includes 38,000 square feet of water fun for all ages. My kids favorite spot by far was the wave pool. The waves are huge and all ages can participate as long as the little ones have an adult with them. And don’t worry about life jackets, they have plenty to borrow while you’re visiting.
My kids also spent quite a bit of time on the slides just perfect for their size located at the Family Fun House area.
After all the playing you’re sure to work up an appetite. But no worries, you won’t have to leave the resort since the resort itself has four places to eat like Big Daddy’s Snack Shack, located inside the water park and is full of family friendly food like pizza, pretzels and deli sandwiches that you can eat right in the water park. Ebb & Ebby’s, located near the lobby is a great place to grab a Starbucks coffee, quick breakfast options or salads and sandwiches. If you’re looking for more of a sit-down breakfast option, check out Mango Mike’s that offers a full breakfast buffet and is also conveniently located near the lobby. And for a full service lunch or dinner check out Quaker Steak & Lube where they have quite the menu selection including award winning wings.
We ate at Quaker Steak & Lube for dinner the evening we arrived and were quite pleased. Dan and I split the Biker Chicken Salad, loaded with grilled chicken and fruit, and a Bacon Cheese Burger.
My oldest enjoyed the cheeseburger kids meal while our younger kids split the Mac & Cheese Skillet (there was no mac & cheese on the kids menu any longer, otherwise they would have chosen that). The kids meals where served in theses adorable paper race cars which of course the kids loved.
Also, when you stay the night you have access to the water park the day you arrive and the day you depart. They also have lockers to hold your stuff after you check out.
