How to Stay Active with Children in the Winter

How to Stay Active with Children in the Winter

If you’re anything like me, you go a bit stir crazy come winter time, regardless whether you are a working parents or not. Having kids, especially young children, means trying to find activities for the kids that tire them out without completely wearing you out as the parent. Dan and I are still working on that and probably will be for life! But regardless of where you live you likely have some sort of winter weather. Here in Michigan we have plenty of “winter” weather that can span anywhere from October through March.

Since the move to our new house, my perspective on winter has changed quite a bit. I’ve always loved snow for snow skiing, but now I’m praying for cold enough weather for our lake to freeze and STAY frozen. It’s been a strange winter so far which has resulted in the lake freezing and thawing over and over again. Regardless, we still like to stay active all year around. Even if you’re not an “outdoor” person, give it a try, fresh air does wonders to the body and mind even if it’s not your ideal temperature outside. Check out my go-to activities below to being active throughout the winter months, you’ll thank me in the spring!

GO ICE SKATING

Of course not everyone has access to a lake however, check out local hockey rinks around your town, there is sure to be open skate times and very likely they have skate rentals for all ages.

TAKE A HIKE OR WALK

If you’re in driving distance of a park go for a local hike. If not, take a walk around your neighborhood. You’ll be surprised at how different the environment can look when it’s snow covered!

HAVE A DANCE PARTY

This is specifically for those with young children. My kids LOVE when I turn on some fast beat music and we dance together. This isn’t just a great workout but it’s also a great way to burn off some energy for the little ones.

WORK OUT WITH VIDEOS

We recently ditched cable but still have plenty of options to choose from with Netflix and Sling TV. Search your local tv stations or even YouTube for workout videos. You’ll be surprised to find several for free. And your kids will likely jump in and try it with you!

JOIN A GYM

There were several years when I went without a gym membership and still stayed in shape, however, since my youngest turned one we have been going to a local gym with childcare. This is a win-win for me since I have the chance to have focused workouts and the kids have a large room to run around in and play with several other kids. Brooks.defyance

There are plenty of reasons not to hibernate this winter, so get out there with your kids and start being active!
