Meat Lovers Mexican Dip

This Meat Lovers Mexican Dip is a nice twist to the popular 7-layer Mexican dip. And with seasoned ground turkey, it gives the dish added protein yet with just as much flavor!

Meat Lovers Mexican Dip2

Looking for an appetizer for a Cinco de Mayo party or a game day party? This Meat Lovers Mexican Dip is an excellent choice and can also be eaten as a meal itself!

Made with lean ground turkey, it adds an extra 16 grams of protein for 1/6 of the recipe (95 grams of protein for the entire dish).  And to be honest, I typically make Mexican inspired dishes with ground beef, albeit the turkey tasted great.

The reason I used ground turkey?

The last few months beef has NOT been on sale in my area. And at $5.99+/pound for extra lean ground beef, I’ll cook with ground turkey any day (which I stock up on when it’s on sale about once a month).

How I Made This Meat Lovers Mexican Dip

I made this Mexican dip a bit differently than the typically 7-layer dip that I typically make.

Meat Lovers Mexican Dip

I first combined the salsa and refried beans (microwaved first).

Then I combined the ground turkey (pre-cooked and seasoned) and green chilies. Next, I added the remaining sour cream, cheese, olives and tomatoes in layers.

Next time I make this I will add the sour cream to either the beans/salsa mix or the turkey/green chilies. It was a little difficult to spread over top of the ground turkey.

I served this dip with these homemade crispy tortilla chips but of course, store-bought works just fine.

And want to know my kids’ favorite part of this recipe?

You may have guessed the tortilla chips, but no, it was the top three layers (cheese, olives and tomatoes).

That’s about half of the ingredients so I call that a win!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 lb lean ground turkey or lean ground beef
  • 3 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 16 oz. can refried beans
  • 4 oz. can chopped green chilies
  • 1 cup lite sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded Mexican-blend cheese 2%
  • 4 oz. can sliced black olives
  • 4 cherry tomatoes sliced

Instructions

  • In a medium sized skillet combine the ground turkey and taco seasoning. Cook until ground turkey is thoroughly cooked. Remove from heat and add green chiles, then set aside.
  • Microwave refried beans for about 1 minute on high or until softened. Combine with salsa.
  • In a 9 x 12 glass baking pan, add the ingredients in the following order: ground turkey-green chilies mixture, beans-salsa mixture, sour cream, cheese, olives and tomatoes.

Notes

You can also add the sour cream to the beans/salsa mix instead of adding it separately.
This dish can be served warm or at room temperature.

Super dip, Kristy! Looks like it eats like a meal. Love your kids favorite ingredients, we are still working on olives and tomatoes in this household. (ahem.)

LOL, yes, I definitely prefer it with beef but trust me it tasted great with turkey too :) And chicken is a fantastic idea, I should try that next time!
