In case you’re not aware, the root beer in this recipe is actually alcoholic beer that tastes just like root beer. Unbelievably so. And with only 4 ingredients in this recipe you can’t go wrong!

I’m personally trying to use my slow cooker more, it’s so simple, convenient and makes such delicious food!

This pulled pork recipe was actually inspired by my popular Slow Cooker Hawaiian Barbecue Pulled Pork recipe I made last month that contained only 6 ingredients. It was so good my husband is insisting it goes into our regular dinner rotation along with the Pineapple Coleslaw.

Lately, my focus is on creating simple meals, with as few ingredients as possible, while the recipe still being full of flavor.

One way to do that is to use a pre-packaged sauce (aka barbecue sauce).

 For this recipe I put the pulled pork on sliders instead of regular size hamburger buns.

It’s a little less messy and easier to control portion size. This recipe is also perfect for tailgating or fall parties.

Tips for Making This Slow Cooker Root Beer Pulled Pork Recipe

  • Look for pork shoulder on sale, I typically see it on sale about once a month at my local grocery store. Save money by purchasing two or more and use one this week and freeze the others for another week.
  • Feel free to substitute any kind of root beer in place of the alcoholic version that this recipe calls for.
  • Serve on whole wheat slider buns to increase your whole grains intake.
  • If you’re not a fan of hamburger buns, or are gluten-free, you can serve the pulled pork over stir fry vegetables or serve it with one of my simple vegetable side dishes such as these roasted carrots

Dietitian’s Dish

I’m not going to discuss how healthy it is to drink beer. But with my guidelines of everything in moderation let’s discuss it.  You’ve likely heard of the recommendation of no more than one drink for women and two drinks for men per day.  

Well, what does that exactly look like? One drink counts as 4 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer, 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits, or 1 ounce of 100-proof spirits.

Slow Cooker Root Beer Pulled Pork Sliders

Equipment

  • slow cooker

Ingredients
  

  • 4 lbs pork shoulder, boneless roast, fat trimmed
  • 1 cup onions, diced
  • 12 oz. Not Your Father's Root Beer (or non-alcoholic)
  • 16 oz. barbecue sauce, divided

Instructions
 

  • Add onions, pork shoulder, beer and half of the barbecue sauce to the slow cooker.
  • Cook for 6 hours on low or until pork is tender (slow cooker times may vary).
  • Remove pork from slow cooker and shred with two forks.
  • Add pork back into slow cooker and stir in remaining barbecue sauce.
  • Serve on slider buns.

How many does this recipe feed?

Hi Barb, I typically estimate about 1/2 pound per adult. So this recipe would feed approximately 8 people. Hope that helps!

Can this be made with regular root beer? Also, do you drain off the liquids once finished cooking?

You should be able to use regular root beer with no problem. And there shouldn't be too much liquid left over once it's done cooking so no need to drain any liquid. Hope that helps!
